Hi {!firstname_fix},
I hope your week has gone well, it looks like summer is winding
down, the brutally hot weather has gone away in northern New
Jersey, leaving us with gorgeous 80 degree days and 65 degree
comfortable nights, just absolutely perfect as far as I’m concerned.
Here are this week’s new downloads:
Video Marketers Tool Kit:
/notloggedin.php
This one looks great, I think you’ll enjoy it a lot.
Steven Wagenheim’s List Building System:
http://www.earn1kaday.com/members/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4681
You probably know I usually like the stuff Steven puts out, I know
he’s successful and not afraid to share, and this is no exception.
Last week I announced the poll about distributing downloads
(optionally) on CD or DVD, and there were a fair number or
respondents (33%) who said they’d be interested in the service,
only 1 of which said he or she couldn’t read DVD’s.
Now 33% isn’t a majority, but I didn’t expect one, I wanted to know
if the service would help a fair number of people, and to me 33% is
certainly a fair number of people.
So what I’ve done this week is put together a DVD with around 3.5
GB of downloads, all of the bigger files (no I don’t have a list,
but just about everything that was over 13 megabytes, I think there
are 46 downloads, give or take a couple, including everything up to
the two listed above.
I also purchased a script that lets me sell this from my own site
rather than sending you to Kunaki, because if I made it publicly
available at Kunaki, or took the risk of it being spidered by Alexa
or other bad spiders, with even a private link there, it could get
purchased by non-members.
So obviously this is only for members here, since many of the files
cannot be distributed except to members of a paid membership site,
or sold separately.
So here’s the link to purchase:

The price covers the Kunaki costs and a few dollars for my trouble,
hopefully it’s easily in the price range for anyone. There are a
few countries that Kunaki doesn’t ship to, so if you can’t find
yours in the list of countries, let me know, and what I can do is
have it shipped to me from Kunaki, and then from me to you. It
will require an extra charge because I’d have to pay shipping both
ways, and the Kunaki fee, but it probably wouldn’t be more than $15
on top of the price of the DVD, it would depend on your country.
The other unfinished business from prior emails is that I want to
thank everyone who offered suggestions about my hard disk troubles
that I mentioned a couple weeks ago. I received a bunch of emails,
PM’s, and there were forum posts with suggestions. I appreciate
them all.
Out of those suggestions, I decided to tighten up my backup
procedures (duh!), and I did investigate most of the suggestions.
In the end I decided that Carbonite was right for me, many people
recommended it. I’ve already installed it on 2 of my computers,
one more to go. Carbonite copies all your data to their site,
automatically, constantly, as it changes, without limit and without
thinking. So you don’t have to do anything except leave your
computer connected to the Internet. This is mostly for those that
have high speed, always on, connections. That’s probably most of
us, I think.
The thing is, since I posted my story, there have been two more
reports just this week from members with similar hard disk crashes,
so there’s obviously something in the air. Maybe it’s the
humidity, the heat, or just bad luck, but I used to have the
attitude “it won’t happen to me”, and it did, so if your backup
system is hit and miss like mine was (mostly miss, it seems), I
think Carbonite is the way to go, you can get a 15 day trial here:

Now, as if I didn’t have enough to keep me busy, I’ve had a mini
revelation of sorts. Our forum and membership numbers continues to
grow, and we’re adding almost 1000 posts a week.
With that, I’m noticing, and others are pointing out to me, that
often the same questions are being asked over and over again. This
is inconvenient for those asking the questions because wouldn’t it
be nice if they found their answers quicker? And for those kind
enough to reply to the questions, sometimes I sense that they would
rather participate in discussions about new topics rather than the
same ones as last month or last year.
So what I’d like to do is put together something to organize those
questions that have been asked multiple times, and have that
“thing” list the most common questions, and point to the “master
thread” where it’s been answered, or where a continuing discussion
is going on.
That way, rather than have a half dozen therads discussing
virtually the same thing, there will be one, hopefully, and all the
information about that topic will be centralized.
I started a thread yesterday to discuss this project:
http://www.earn1kaday.com/members/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4694
You can see what I have in mind, and have encouraged everyone to
help me find common important topics that are asked and answered
more than once. Or, as was started by one member today, topics
that he would like to see answered that probably a lot of people
would be interested in, that we should have a master thread about.
So check it out and tell me what you think and what suggestions you
have. I’m not sure exactly how I’ll organize this, it might become
a part of the Database of Lists, but more likely something in the
Essentials section, so that new members can get a running start on
the most common topics, and existing members can have a place to go
to when they need to refresh their memories.
The problem is that phpBB forum searching is not so convenient and
often no help unless you search for exactly the right words. And
Google site search won’t work on a password protected site.
Speaking of password protected sites, I came up with an idea a
couple weeks ago, and was looking for a solution for a very
technical problem, specifically how to identify members who (gasp!)
were sharing their user names and passwords. I went to resident
techie Steve (clickbuild), and he took up the challenge to build
such a script.
We’re now able to catch user name sharing, and the application
(PawDog, short for Protected Area WatchDog), is almost ready to be
released as a product. I’ll be asking for a few (just a few)
people to beta test in the next week or so, so anyone that has an
active membership site and will commit to spending time to install
and work with Steve to make sure it works can get a copy.
Just a tip. The installation isn’t exactly the easiest in the
world, I’ve found out, so we’re trying to isolate server issues
with this pre-launch. I had an issue with one of my HostGator
servers, which was worked out, but it wasn’t easily solved. That’s
the price of Internet security products, I guess.
You can PM me if you seriously will try it out. If you don’t have
time to install it, and use it, and tweak it soon after receipt,
and if you don’t have an active membership site, please don’t
request it at this time. After beta testing is done, we’ll be
releasing it at a discount price for members, before doing a WSO, and
then probably selling it on Clickbank. I think this is an issue
which is very important to anyone who password protects anything on
their sites, and the price will be affordable to all.
Just the first 3 to 5 serious volunteers will be accepted as beta
testers, so first come, first served, the rest will go on a list in
case the first few don’t actually test it as requested.
I’ve always been sure that all our members are honest and don’t
share their user names, but I do worry that sometimes one will get
hacked and passed around, so I’ll be contacting those that are
showing up as accessing from multiple spots to get them to change
their passwords, and/or banning the IP addresses of those that seem
to have hacked their way in.
I guess that’s enough for this week, I have enough to keep me busy
for a while, and hopefully you do as well, so as always, I wish you
all the best.
Dennis, the 5 Bucks a Day Guy.
