Good morning. I hope you’re doing well.
By the next update, we’ll be into the very
last quarter of 2018. How time flies.
Speaking of time flying, I’ve recently
been consumed with trying to understand
what online marketing beginners have to
cope with.
We’ve all been there, done that. In my
case the learning process started in 1998
when I was challenged to convert some of
my eBay customers into buyers off a web
site.
I didn’t have a web site. I didn’t know
anything about hosting or HTML or FTP or
certainly cPanel or graphics and there
was no video to speak of back then, was
there?
Somehow I pieced it all together bit
by bit, month by month, year by year.
And so, most likely, did you.
But how did I do that? Where did I learn
it? In what chronological order did I
master it?
I’m afraid I can’t remember.
So when someone asked me if our DAB
Coaching program helped beginners learn
the basics, I had to honestly reply, “no,
not really”.
And I decided to do something about that.
Which began a period of trying to
remember what the basics actually are,
and where to learn them.
I think I’m on the right track, but
at the same time, I’m seeing that there
are lots of basic skills that maybe I
don’t really understand all that well
myself, 20 years later.
Like CSS and most of PHP and some
things about WordPress and lots of
other basics that I’d love to learn
at some point, because some of it
would be really, really helpful.
And so, most likely, do you have some
gaps in your online skills, technical
or otherwise.
Isn’t it amazing how forgiving online
marketing can be?
You don’t have to be an expert on all
facets, but you do have to be willing
to learn and experiment, and make
mistakes.
And we’re back to “failure is your
friend”, aren’t we?
How much more successful could we
be if we knew virtually all of the basic
skills, at least well enough to realize
whether those we’re outsourcing them
to are doing a good job at a fair
price?
Or what’s actually possible to do?
