How are you today? Wonderful, I’m hoping.
One big stress point has just vanished from
my life. I might have mentioned that my Amazon
Web Services account was broken into last
month, and someone initiated several hundred
EC2 processes, whatever they are.
I was notified of a suspected breach by
Amazon the day it happened, and by the time
(a couple hours later) that I was able to
find and terminate the processes, it had
resulted in over $5600 in charges.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they were doing
some Bitcoin mining.
I jumped through a bunch of hoops to secure
my account to their satisfaction (I kept
saying I never want to run EC2, all I use
is Amazon S3, but evidently there’s no way
to turn off certain of their many available
functions).
So anyway, after securing my account, I was
told that my request for a refund of the
unauthorized charges had to go through
the billing department, and it would take
a while to process.
So I waited and waited and waited, meanwhile
my credit card was charged for June and
I only heard back from Amazon this morning,
telling me they indeed processed a refund.
The whole process took about 3 weeks.
Yes, I could have disputed the charge, but
since all my downloads everywhere use Amazon
S3, I was afraid it would compromise all my
site functionality, so yes, I was a bit
worried.
Now all is well.
Lesson from all this: always use multi
factor authentication or two factor
authentication or whatever a site calls
it if there’s any chance of someone
using your account for reasons that
are unpleasant.
