I hope your Thanksgiving was a good one
yesterday and that you spent it with family
and/or friends.
Today is Black Friday. It sounds ominous,
doesn’t it? It’s meant to signal a good thing,
though, and hopefully the retailers have a
good day.
I remember when I owned my retail store, we
looked forward to the day with great hope and
anticipation. I just owned a little store,
so if I could get an extra dozen or two
people to come by, I was happy.
Nothing like what’s happening at the malls
and at the big box stores today, not close.
More and more people are shopping online now,
and there’s a real concern over the fact
that shopping malls are dying. We live very
near Paramus, New Jersey, called the mall
capital of the world or something, and
they’re trying to reinvent themselves and
to be a case study of success in a changing
retail world.
I hope it works out. But even me, who has a
soft spot in his heart for mom and pop
retailers… I shop online almost exclusively
except for groceries and other impulse items.
