I’m sitting here waiting for a PayPal rep to contact me,
recovering from the cold sweats over unauthorized usage of my
PayPal debit card to the tune of over $1000 last night, and then
evidently someone, after I cancelled the card, trying to break into
my account.
It’s a rough world in cyberspace and not getting any better, as
evidenced not only by my recent issues, but also Judy’s experience
with her Skype account being hacked.
She has good advice in her threads which I’ll let you read, but
I’ve upgraded the difficulty of guessing my major passwords
wherever possible, including of course the PayPal one. I urge you
to do that also.
In the case of the debit card transactions, it evidently wasn’t
someone that had found my debit card number and went on a spending
spree, as the charges were all made payable to a major Internet
crowdsourcing company.
The first payment was credited to my account with them, and the
others, after that one worked, were made payable to them also, but
not credited to my account. It seems to me that this was an “inside
job”.
I won’t name the company in this email, which gets posted to the
blog and would be public, but I do name the company inside the
forum. I did contact them, and they said they’ve removed the
charges, but that’s not really very satisfying, especially since
the transactions are still being held against my available account
balance at PayPal as a pending transaction (not completed).
