Repurposing Content – The Right Way and the Wrong Way

by 5buckguy

Writing excellent content takes a lot out of you. You invest tons of time researching and crafting the right words to reach your audience and provide them the best experience.

Repurposing your content for other uses is a great way to make the most out of your writing. However, there is a right and wrong way to do so. Repurposing content the wrong way can tarnish your reputation as a trusted authority, as well as bring down your search engine ranks.

Don’t worry; I have the answers to help you identify the right way to repurpose your content for other uses on the web. Once you read my report, you will be able to take what you’ve already written and put it to use in other places on the web.

The Wrong Way

Before we get into the right way to repurpose content, let’s first identify what you should not be doing.

The first thing is never to submit an article to an article directory and then post it on your blog at the same time. You also don’t want to place content on your website and then spin the content for article directory submission.

Why? Well, the whole intention of repurposing is to create a path that leads to and from your website or blog. So, if someone finds your article in EzinesArticles.com that leads them to the same content on your website… You get the picture.

It just doesn’t make sense to attract visitors to your site with content and then offer then the same content. You have to give them something more.

The Intention of Your Content

Your content is a marketing tool to attract customers to your business. So, it draws in the potential buyer with whom you build a trusting relationship. Eventually they will buy from you. This process may happen immediately, or it may take an extended period of time.

Somewhere in this whole process you can scare them away at any time. Spewing out the same content over and over in various venues is a surefire way to kill the deal cold. Nobody wants to listen to you say the same thing again and again.

Your potential buyers want something new and enticing from you. They want to know you are a trusted source of information and not just some guy who wrote something really compelling once.

Regurgitation, Spinning, and Repurposing

You don’t want to just regurgitate the same information over again. We’ve already determined that. And you definitely don’t want to just put a cute spin on the same content and repost it. No one is a sucker for that either.

So, you need to really understand what it means to repurpose your writing. The simplest way to do so is offer different formats. Convert your articles into podcasts or videos. Take your reports and turn them into a short blog series that makes the content more personal.

You can take any 3 given types of content delivery and give it the same call-to-action. Why? Because certain people prefer receiving content through different medium. Some people love reading; others love watching video. Some may be on the road and in need of a good audio source.

Making Small Larger

Another great way to repurpose is to take smaller content and make it larger. Say you write a series of blog posts about house training a dog. Over the course of 7 posts, you went through a step-by-step detailed training guide for new dog owners. You have enough content now to turn it into a free report or video series.

Think about your Twitter posts, forum posts, and other short useful information you write for your niche audience. Whenever you post something short and useful, copy and paste it into a Word document. After time, you will have enough content on a given subject to create a longer work.

Product reviews can be converted into “Top 10” lists. Old blog posts can be turned into a series of autoresponder tips. When your clients or audience send you questions, save them and make a FAQ article. Most of the information you provide on a daily basis can be saved and repurposed for something longer.

Think Outside of Your Content

Everyday you make great connections and have meaningful discussions with intelligent people. Take note of your discussions and use that information for content. You may go to lunch with a colleague or have a candid email discussion with someone in your field.

Any contact you make will provide you with useful information that you can repurpose. Coffee chats can turn into blog posts; instant messages can become Twitter posts. There are a number of ways to create new and exciting content from everyday discussions.

Always remember the intention of your content. It shouldn’t be just to get your name all over the web. It should have the intention to close the deal with your buyers. Make it useful, enticing, and fresh. Repurpose with the purpose to inform, and build a trusting relationship with your customers.

    Dennis,
I hadn’t thought about repurposing content in this way. I especially like the idea of taking reviews and creating a top 10 list. Thanks for the great ideas! -Norene

Great prospective of thinking about your customer needs and wants FIRST, instead of how easy or convenient it is for the marketer.

Exactly. Not everybody enjoys their content the same way, some like text, some like quick videos, some like audios, we need to appeal to everyone.

Excellent advice as usual. The reasons you mentioned for not posting a spun article on your blog is very good to know. I will certainly keep that in mind.

It really amazes me that there are lots of Information Products on “How To Get Loads of Traffic On Your Blog, Facebook, and Twitter pages. Rarely do they (the experts) explain “How to Write Good Content” which is needed in order for your readers to gain trust in you as an expert in your niche. Thanks for the wealth of information that you’ve given away free of charge.

Thanks for a different perspective on content repurposing. Most say to spin it and put on ezines, your blog and so forth. I don’t think I’d want to read someone’s article at ezines and then get linked to their blog finding the same article.

I am just starting to look into writing articles, so this post will help me get going in the right direction.

Also, thanks for that sweet little article helper, it’s a real gem.

Repurposing content is an absolute must and something that I will be implementing more in 2011…

The strategy I’ve been using with awesome results is creating a 1,500+ blog post that is packed with value (like Dennis’ one above) and then creating 5 or 6 smaller articles from the same content.

I then submit these shorter and slightly rewritten articles to the directories. In the article resource box I have one link that points directly back to the blog post and another link that points to the home page.

According to Market Samurai the links back to the home page are doing great things for my search engine rankings and my Analytics is showing that the short article leading to the well detailed blog post is a winner… The average length of stay is 10+ minutes and the bounce rate is less than 20%… I am very happy with that :)

It’s about relevancy from the article to blog post or video to blog post, just like going from an ad to a landing page.

I haven’t started converting these long blog posts into audio, video and give away pdf’s yet, but this will change in 2011. I was getting great results just with simple article marketing, so can’t wait to see the spike when I repurpose into audio, video and give away pdf’s.

    Excellent info Dennis.

Do you have a Tweet service where I can pick up your latest suggestions?

That’s great feedback, Ian, thanks for your comment. I haven’t personally done that on such a large scale, but I can certainly believe the results you’re getting, and when you start repurposing to video sites, podcast sites, etc., it will only get better by a vast amount.

Marcus, the best way to get notified quickly about new blog posts is by using the link at the top of the page in the header that says “learn about new blog posts”.

What a great idea. I hadn’t thought about re-purposing at all. I’ve done this with Cover letters for jobs. Can you give us a few examples of the idea in practical terms. Tell us an idea that came up in a coffeee meeting that you used later for instance.
Also, what would I be posting in a social network site that could be used for a blog if I came up with enough of them?

I’m doing the niche Blitz thing and only have one page up which is of course a specific niche. Niche Blitz is the very first time I’ve done anything like this before. How are the ideas you mentioned utilized. Can you give more specific details? What are article directories?? I have things happen in every day life that are interesting or amusing , but how do you turn writing about them into money?
